Origin is not available as a native Mac version - however, Intel-based Macs can run Windows programs, including Origin, seamlessly using virtualization software.

[edit] Requirements

  • An Intel®-based Mac: MacBook®, MacBook® Pro, iMac®, Mac Pro, Mac Mini.
  • Virtualization software: VMware® Fusion or Parallels® Desktop.
  • Microsoft® Windows®: 2000, XP, or Microsoft Vista®, Windows 7.
  • Origin or OriginPro.

[edit] General setup instructions

  1. Install the virtualization software on your Mac computer.
  2. Using the virtualization software, create a new virtual computer and install Windows on the virtual computer.
  3. Run the virtual computer on which Windows is installed. When Windows is ready, install Origin.

[edit] Example - Setting up Trial Versions of VMware Fusion and Windows 7

[edit] Installing and starting VMware Fusion

  1. Download a trial version of VMware Fusion 3. You need to register and activate your VMware account to get a 30 day trial version license. The license is provided when you log into the VMware website to download the VMware Fusion.
  2. Run the VMware installer you downloaded.
  3. Select the installation option.
  4. When asked to enter a serial number, select the "ignore" option.
  5. Complete the VMware installation process. When you are asked to enter license, enter the license provided from step 1.
  6. Start VMware Fusion from the Applications folder.

[edit] Creating a Windows virtual machine

  1. Download a trial version of Windows 7 Enterprise.
  2. In VMware Fusion, run the Windows 7 Enterprise installer you downloaded. You can view a movie showing this process.
  3. During the Windows installation, you do not need to enter a Windows product key.
  4. Complete the Windows installation process. After installing Windows, VMware Fusion automatically installs VMware Tools and powers on the virtual machine.

[edit] Installing and starting Origin

  1. On the virtual machine, download the Origin evaluation if you do not own Origin.
  2. Run the Origin evaluation installer and complete the installation as prompted.
  3. Start the Origin evaluation.

[edit] Tips for running Origin

  • What license types are supported using this configuration?
ALL license types have been found to run successfully on an Intel-based Mac using virtualization software. This includes node-locked, dongle-managed, and concurrent licenses.

  • Why can't I paste the license text from the web page onto the Origin dialog?
Note that the shortcut keys for copy and paste are different for Mac (cmd+c and cmd+v) and for Windows (ctrl+c and ctrl+v). If you copied the license text from browser running on Mac OS using cmd+c, you should use ctrl+v to paste the text onto the Origin dialog.

  • Can I paste an Origin graph to Word as an OLE embedded object?
If you are running Word for Mac, then the pasted object is treated only as an image and you cannot double-click the image to open the Origin project. If on the other hand you are running Word on the Windows partition, then you can OLE-paste your graph from Origin onto Word.

  • How do I exchange files between Mac and Windows?
Just drag-and-drop the file between the Mac and Windows partitions! The virtual machine creates a copy when a file is dragged and dropped in either direction. You could thus easily open an OPJ by dragging and dropping the file from a Mac folder right onto the Origin workspace. Similarly, you can export a graph from Origin to a folder in the Windows partition and then drag-and-drop the exported file to a Mac application for publication purposes.
