Overview

Often there will be Origin clients accessing a FLEXnet server from both inside and outside a firewall. In this case the Origin clients can (though do not need to be) configured differently. Below we describe the simplest configuration for this scenario, though there are several ways to achieve a working system.

Simplest Configuration

  1. First configure the firewall and external Origin clients as described here.
  2. On the Origin clients that are inside the firewall:
    1. Run Origin
    2. In Origin's License Information dialog box, set the FLEXlm server text box value to the server's internal IP address (or fully qualified domain name if the server's name is in DNS)
    3. Set the port number to the port number specified on the VENDOR line in the FELXnet server's license file

VENDOR orglab port=61616

    1. Example: for the FLEXnet server whose internal IP address is 192.168.0.10 and whose port specified on the VENDOR line of the FLEXnet server's license file is 61616, the License Information dialog box would appear similar to: Image:Home_User_License_Internal.jpg

Alternative Configurations

  1. The FLEXnet server uses a second port. Normally this is left unchanged and defaults, transparently, to a value in the range 27000-27009 (note this is a separate port to that specified on the VENDOR line). Origin clients inside the firewall are able to find this port without it being specified by the Administrator. To use this configuration:
    1. On the Origin clients inside the firewall, run Origin
    2. In the License Information dialog box no port number need be specified.
    3. Other settings are as described previously
    4. Example License Information dialog box for an Origin client inside a firewall in a system where some Origin clients are also outside the firewall:
      Image:Internal_User_NO_Port.jpg
  2. If The FLEXnet server's default port range cannot be used for some reason (e.g. it is already in use), a different port can be specified. To do this add the port to the SERVER line in the FLEXnet server's license file.
    1. Example: For a FLEXnet server whose name is xyzservername, with MAC address 001111111111 and specified port number 61615, the SERVER line would appear as:

      SERVER xyzservername 001111111111 61615

    2. Once this is done, this means that any Origin clients inside the firewall which were assuming this service was in the default port range, will no longer be able to connect. To correct this, specify the VENDOR port in the License Information dialog box
    3. Example License Information dialog box for an Origin client inside a firewall, in a system where some Origin clients are also outside the firewall. The SERVER line in the FLEXnet server's license file specifies a port number of 61615, but the Origin clients still connect to the VENDOR port 61616:
